A new way of eating

Well after watching the documentary "Hungry For Change" I really did decide to work on changing my ways.

Today was day one (well day 1 1/2 - I kind of started mid-day yesterday) of my newer/cleaner way of eating.

I had been eating relatively clean up until seeing the movie, so it hasn't been that big of a leap. Went to the store and replaced a lot of our stuff with organic versions. Stocked up on produce and organic eggs, hormone free chicken, etc. It was hard for me. I am a coupon queen and a budget shopper. So I had to 'suck up' the fact that the normal eggs were $2 less and the hormone/natural, grass-fed beef was $3 more for the package. (We are worth it, we are worth it, we are worth it.)  I threw out my yellow-packet sweetener, got rid of the 'spray' fake butter, and decided that I'll be aiming to put only good things with identifiable words into my body most of the time.

I also decided to do a little experiment and cut out most gluten the last few days (I'm not being over-the-top with that but got rid of the biggest gluten offenders.)

Last week I went to the doctors for tests because I have a stomach ache every day of my life. Hmmm, no gluten the last 3 days, no stomach ache. Wouldn't be surprised to learn that I do have a little intolerance.

So here's my day. I have to say that I got in triple the vegetable I usually do and I feel pretty awesome.

Breakfast:

1 egg over easy, 1 small sweet potato, left-over fresh green beans, 1tsp. of EVOO, cup of coffee with splash of almond/coconut milk (I know that this is a weird breakfast but I needed a carb-y thing and have cut out my whole grain toast because of the gluten thing.) The green beans? eh, why not?

Snack:
1/2 cup of 0% fat greek yogurt / frozen blueberries

6 raw, unsalted almonds (more than six pictured because six looked so lonely on the plate.)



Lunch:
Spring salad mix/sliced strawberries/a few grapes/fresh cilantro/fresh parsley/half cucumber and a few raw/unsalted sunflower seeds. balsamic vinegar + 1 tsp. of EVOO and a small piece of skinless chicken.

Snack:
Green juice: 2 carrots/2 celery stalks/a few grapes/handful of spinach/cilantro/parsley/cucumber/little piece of ginger



Dinner:
Laura's lean beef hamburger patty, (another) sweet potato, broccoli 1tsp. of EVOO, tomatoes

Snack:
Grapefruit

Lots of food, a few tsps. of healthy olive oil, a few almonds for some more healthy fats and tons of produce. My beverage of choice is always water.

It's not that hard, you just have to have all the stuff around. I am hoping to keep it up!

That is the healthiest stuff I have EVER seen. Seriously, you have raised the bar REALLY high! I thought I was doing well with my Boca Burger and mixed green salad for dinner. You are, in a word, AMAZING. Keep up the good work. Can't say that I'll ever get there (that many veggies would put my body into a complete disbelieving SHOCK--in fact, just looking at them is making me go find the last of the Girl Scout cookies), but your enthusiasm and dedication make me wish I could do it! :)

That is just awesome. Congrats on the lifestyle change. You are going to love it for sure.

Just don't be afraid to treat yourself every once in a while.....homemade popcorn, rice cakes with nut butter, raisins....you get the picture.

Thanks for the comments - ironically I do feel like I'm treating myself because I feel like it's indulgent to have so much fresh/organic produce - even the raw almonds are out of my usual budget.

I feel really good - and it feels good to not be so afraid of (healthy) fats. I'm still not going to be extravagant but i'm definitely going to be using the healthy oils, nuts and avocados more for health and to remain satisfied.

Don't you worry Jason - I'm not afraid of a little popcorn or treats ;) I have to get a hot air popper. no more processed microwave "94% fat free butter-flavored" pop-corn in this house!

I've been gluten free for 11 days now and I realized the other day that I'm in a much better mood. Even today's deck debacle didn't send me into the panic that being 5 minutes late for something usually does. I googled gluten and depression together and WOW!

Ha, Ang! That's interesting.

I have to say I definitely have a pep in my step today and feel happy and good. I wonder if that's taking a way the gluten or all the veggies or both? hmmm.

Jen, a friend of mine tried a gluten-free diet as a show of support for a friend who had just been diagnosed with celiac disease and she was amazed at how much better she felt. This is probably something we all should try. I'll have to watch the documentary. Makes me wonder if my girls might benefit, too.

A fresh veggie juice always gives you a boost of energy but I've been drinking it and eating lots of veggies for a long time. It's definitely the gluten. And if your stomach ache is gone I'd be willing to lay money down that it's the gluten too!

Something is definitely working. In just a little over 2 days I feel more energetic, more alert, and less bloat-y. I'm gonna keep it up and see how it goes. I also don't tend to use a lot of (added) sugar to begin with - and these foods are even better sugar-wise, so no real wheat, sugar, or gluten. Wha!?

The only place I'll really miss gluten, if I was to give it up, is I do enjoy a sandwich - I know they have gluten free breads and all… but still. We'll see.

That is awesome! I try to eat clean daily, I don't always succeed, but my kids do. Do you think you will feel deprived of any of your favorite foods?

I don't know if I'll feel deprived yet. I gave up most junk-y food a long time ago and I'm enjoying the food I'm eating so I don't think I will.

I'm approaching this as a choice. I don't have to give up anything but I'm choosing to eat better quality of foods most of the time.

I'm not giving up wine or my Saturday night martini. I think if I really want something, I'll have it but I'm going to strive to eat clean 90% of the time.

Jen! I am going to check out that documentary. I am so inspired by this post. Thank you for writing it! I think I can do these things too - and I want to!! I want to view food as fuel to run, workout and also as a way to keep me healthy and on the way to weight loss. Thank you for sharing what you are doing - this is awesome motivation!!
