ING NYC Marathon lottery results are in

My dream of running the 2012 ING NYC marathon has been officially crushed.

painful

I understand it's a long shot to get in thru the lottery but for some reason I really, really believed it was gonna happen.

I went in to celebrate the opening day today in Central Park.

It was a beautiful day and I was surrounded by 300 other running nerds / NYC marathon hopefuls:

pick me! Or not :'(
At least I got a cool swag bag and a cute tee-shirt:
116 - not a winner
Better luck next year…

No I'm not. Took this picture full of hope
I went to the gym and pounded a speedy 3 miles to get out the post-no-good marathon news depression. It helped.

Last year was the last year you can get denied 3 years in a row and gain automatic entry. This was my first year - so I have no future net.

Did you get in?
What's your dream race?
Have you ever been crushed by not getting into a dream race?

XO
Jen

  1. Sorry to hear you didn't get it. But now you can make other plans! Maybe for something even more wonderful, for you.

  2. Sorry to hear, if it makes you feel any better, I went to the opening day last year and the drawings were rigged. The names in the wheel were preselected (not numbers like they were this year - they learned from their mistakes). The announcer/MC last year would pull a card and read a name, but he accidentally read the same name two times in a row (after the guy had already won a bib). Everyone was furious. So it only made me think the actual lottery was also preselected by other means. I didn't get in last year either, All I got was the bag/tshirt etc. I got in this year through the 9+1. If if is your dream, do it this way. It is worth it!! Each race has a purpose, a finish line and something bigger :) Good luck!

  3. I am so sorry you didn't get in. I got in this year, but the 2 people I wanted to run with didn't. I'm trying to convince them to go the charity route, and I promised to join them if they do. Have you considered running with a charity?

  4. Sorry to hear you didn't get in - the idea of race lotteries blows my mind a bit, though it's exciting at the same time ... so many people want to commit to this active event! The Chicago Marathon isn't lottery based, but they sold out this year in less than six days - I was going to wait a month and see if I felt I could commit, and then realized I had no time to waste!

  5. Sorry you didn't get in Jen! My fiend Lynda and her husband were at opening day, also, and then they ran 6 miles in Central Park. I NEED to do that!

  6. I didn't get in either. But I'm good with it because I signed up for MCM the week before. I would have done both but that wouldn't be ideal.
This was my second year in the lottery so I am grandfathered in.
    Here's to next year!

  7. Thanks, all. I'll survive. Hopefully another year.

I considered the charity route but I do not have friends and family who could donate more than $20 here or even $50 there and I think it would be stressful and tough to get to a $3,000 - $5,000 level.

  8. I didn't get in either. It sounds like I wasn't as crushed as you were though...

I consoled myself by immediately registering for another race without a lottery. LOL

  9. Jen, just checked out Live Strong and you have to raise $3,800!! Crazy, right?!?

  10. sorry you didn't get in...this year was my third rejection (i think if you live in ny/nj your hances of getting in are a lot smaller - my friend also applied twice and never got in). can you do the 9+1?

  11. Eh, whatcha gonna do? I'll get in someday, somehow.

I'd love to do the 9 + 1 - I just don't think I can afford it! I have to think the race fees for each of those races are on the pricier side plus getting to and parking in / around NYC and the boroughs adds up too. I'd have to really save to be able to do that and since I already do a few pricier races a year (that I love -like Jersey Shore Marathon) I don't know if I could swing it.

But it's definitely something to consider!

  12. Jen, the 9+1 is another scheme! You have to get into the city for all of the races PLUS get to the NYRR office to pick up your race packet! That's TWO trips in PLUS reg. fees! It probably winds up costing $3,799!

  14. Bummer, the lotteries kind of stink but I am sure you will get in one of these days!
